The Institution for Transport Policy Studies is an independent foundation established under the auspices of Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The activities of the Institution are non-profit and involve comprehensive research and survey programs on transportation matters. The Institution also evaluates transport policy and offers recommendations to the Japanese government and concerned parties on transport policy issues.
The overall aim of Institution is to contribute towards the development of transport policy in order to promote the welfare and quality of life in Japan, the country's economy and greater harmony in international relations.
The Institution is funded primarily by an endowment from the Nippon Foundation. It also receives income from 166 sponsoring members, from subsidies provided by the Nippon Foundation and from consulting fees for projects on behalf of national and local public authorities.
