Frederik Sorensen

Frederik Sørensen has established his own firm (FRESAIR) after his retirement from the European Commission in 2001. In this context he is active as a Civil Aviation Counsellor. He has been working as an expert for the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in Western Africa and for the European Airports on relevant EU legislative proposals in particular on slot allocation. He is a Monitoring Trustee for the merger of Air France and KLM and he is advising the European Commission as an economic expert on progress in the Western Balkan countries in respect of the European Common Aviation Area (ECAA).

In 1977 Dr. Sørensen was nominated as head of the then created air transport division. The task of the division was to develop air transport policies for the EU. In this context he has developed a substantial number of regulations for the European Union in particular with a view to liberalize air transport and thereby ensure that air carriers would be able to take and be responsible for normal commercial decisions. This resulted in Community wide liberalization of air transport by January first 1993. In addition he has developed rules in associated key areas such as passenger rights, CRS and slot allocation. His responsibilities also included the enforcement of those rules. This has made him an acknowledged expert in aviation regulatory matters. Dr. Sørensen has also been active in developing and negotiating multilateral aviation agreements such as a European Common Aviation Area and drafts of a Transatlantic Common Aviation Area (TCAA).

Dr. Sørensen received a PH.D. in transport economics from the University of Copenhagen in 1962.
