  Jiro Hanyu

President, Japan International Transport Institute

Before becoming President of JITI in August of 2002, Mr. Hanyu had served as an official of the Japanese government for more than 33 years.He has held various important positions including Vice-Minister for Transport and International Affairs and Director General of the Transport Policy Bureau.

When the Ministerial Conference on Transport was held in Tokyo in January 2002, he played a leading role in adopting the Transport Ministers’ Statement on Counter-Terrorism. From 1994 to 1998, Mr. Hanyu served as the Deputy Director-General, and later as the Senior Deputy Director-General, of the Civil Aviation Bureau. Mr. Hanyu played a leading role in concluding the 1998 Memorandum of Understanding, an historic aviation agreement between Japan and the United States.

Mr. Hanyu graduated from Tokyo University in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in economics.
