Mr. Efthimios Mitropoulos
Secretary General International Maritime Organization
Mr. Mitropoulos has been the seventh Secretary General of the
International Maritime Organization since January 1, 2004. Since
he joined the Organization in1979, he has served in various
positions including Head of the Navigation Section, Senior Deputy
Director for Navigation and Related Matters and Director of
the Maritime Safety Division. Between 2000 and 2003, he served
as Assistant Secretary-General, retaining his duties as Director
of the Maritime Safety Division.
Mr. Mitropoulos’ association with the IMO goes back to
1965 when he first represented Greece at an IMO meeting held
at the then Headquarters of the Organization at Berners Street.
Between 1966 and 1977 he participated, initially as a member
and later as Head of the Greek Delegation, at various sub-committees,
the Maritime Safety Committee, Council and the Assembly of the
IMO.
He graduated from the Hellenic Coast Guard Academy in 1964 and
retired with the rank of Rear Admiral.
Mr. Mitropoulos is the author of several books on shipping economics
and policy, categories/types of merchant vessels, safety of
navigation and other shipping-related matters. His book on “Tankers:
Evolution and technical issues” won first prize at a pan
Hellenic competition organized to mark the Year of Shipping,
1969.
