Dr. Kumagai is an International Fellow of the Intelligent Transport Society of America (ITS America) and has served as the Vice President of Sumitomo Electric USA since 1998.
Dr. Kumagai joined Sumitomo Electric Inc. in 1971. His ITS projects in Japan include freeway management systems, digital road maps and navigation systems. Dr. Kumagai was closely involved with the Comprehensive Automobile Communication System (CACS), a pilot project to provide vehicle operators with real-time traffic information. As an International Fellow at ITS America, Dr. Kumagai has worked to coordinate ITS developments in Japan and America by conducting joint meetings and encouraging the exchange of information. Dr. Kumagai is also interested in ITS in developing countries, and has examined the state of ITS in Asia. In the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity, Dr. Kumagai chairs an ITS study group and investigates case studies for Asian cities.
Dr. Kumagai received his bachelors and masters degrees in Electrical Engineering from Osaka University. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Systems Engineering from Kobe University.
